Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation
Nentawe Yilwatda’s election as the new national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) represents a significant milestone for the party as it seeks to balance internal restructuring with external electoral challenges.
Yilwatda, who currently serves as the minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction, was elected during a consensus agreement reached at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, July 24.
His selection was officially announced at the NEC meeting, which included key party stakeholders focused on establishing a unified direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. Yilwatda’s emergence follows the resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje from the position on June 27. Party leaders have characterized this transition as both strategic and unifying.
“It was a consensus decision, reflecting a shared desire to strengthen the APC from within and prepare robustly for upcoming electoral battles,” said a senior party official present at the meeting.
Yilwatda, who is transitioning from a federal ministerial role to the top leadership position within Nigeria's ruling party, is widely recognized as a technocrat with strong grassroots credibility.
Party insiders believe that his combination of policy experience and field-level engagement could provide the cohesion the APC urgently needs, especially in preparation for the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo, Ondo, and Kogi states.
"This is a bridge-builder that the party can rally around. He brings fresh energy and the organizational discipline necessary to lead us confidently into 2027," stated another member of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Yilwatda's ascension represents a significant moment for the APC as it strives to balance internal restructuring with external electoral challenges. Observers note that his dual identity—as a minister with national reach and a politician with grassroots sensitivity—positions him well to manage competing party interests while reconnecting the APC with its broader support base.
The party is expected to unveil its new strategic framework under Yilwatda's leadership in the coming weeks.
