Nigerian singer Gabriel Othe Amanyi, better known by his stage name Terry G, has responded to those who are trolling him for his perceived declining career.
In an Instagram post, he emphasized that legends are respected for life. He used the Hollywood music couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z as examples, pointing out how their impact is honored.
However, he noted that in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, people are quick to dismiss their own legends. Terry G stated that this mindset leads many to view their ancestors negatively while regarding Western ancestors as revered figures.
“I hear people say, ‘Your time has passed!’—and it sounds like a form of brain damage. In the West, legends are respected for life. No one calls Jay-Z or Beyoncé outdated; their impact is respected.
But here in Africa, especially in Nigeria, we tend to discard our own. That’s why we believe our ancestors were evil, while Western ancestors are seen as gods. It’s time to break free from that mindset. If you don’t keep adding value to yourself and those around you, your worth will fade—no matter how great you once were.
We must do better.”
In a recent post, he addressed his name change and how many believed it would end his career. Terry clarified that his journey did not come to an end; instead, it was divinely redirected.
“They say my career ended the day I became Terry Gzus. But let me set the record straight: my journey didn’t end; it was divinely redirected. Gzus is not Jesus Christ; it is a reflection of the God within me—fearless, chosen, and unapologetic. You cannot kill purpose by changing a name. What is ordained cannot be canceled.”
In a past interview, Terry G revealed surprising details about the type of songs he performs and the significance they hold. He boldly stated that he considers himself a secular musician and, when he sings, he is singing for the devil. He also explained the reasons behind this declaration.
Early last year, the popular singer expressed his frustration with his colleagues for turning their backs on him. He shared his sadness over how his attempts to reach out to some of them during his difficult times were met with silence. He questioned whether it was fair for them to treat him this way and wondered if they would only hold a remembrance for him after he was gone.
