Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging for culpable homicide. In addition to the death sentence on Count 1, Justice Nwosu-Iheme imposed two years of imprisonment on Nwachukwu for each of Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Nwosu-Iheme stated that the prosecution had successfully met the burden of proof required by law, establishing that Nwachukwu's actions directly led to Osinachi's death on April 8, 2022.
Nwachukwu was first arraigned on June 3, 2022, facing a 23-count charge that included culpable homicide, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and spousal battery. During the trial, the prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imala from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, presented 17 witnesses, including two of Nwachukwu's and Osinachi’s children, and submitted 25 exhibits as evidence.
In his defense, Nwachukwu testified personally, called four witnesses, and presented four exhibits. While pleading for leniency, his counsel, Reginald Nwali, requested the court to temper justice with mercy. However, Mrs. Imala urged the court to apply the law strictly, which the court ultimately upheld.
In addition to the death sentence, Nwachukwu received a six-month prison term for Count 10, a three-year prison term for Count 11, and was fined ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 for Counts 6 and 7, respectively.
This tragic case garnered national attention, igniting widespread discussions about domestic violence and the need for better protection of vulnerable family members in Nigeria.
